§ 12a · Before the Garage · LifeLog · FR
The phone company was listening first.
Between 1964 and 1970 AT&T monitored some 33 million long-distance calls to catch blue boxes, and recorded more than 1.5 million, with no warrant and no warning.
In 1971 two friends named Steve found the same tones in a federal laboratory’s library and built a box of their own. Jobs later said that without it there would be no Apple.
The garage is where the story starts because that is where the ownership starts.
